Cheddar Brats, Lake Laughter — and Just a Touch of Algae
There are few spots more legendary for northeast Wisconsin boaters than Streich’s Beach on Lake Winnebago. Sure, it’s not the sun-drenched Bahamas, but with local party cove and a sandy cove bottom for days, and a football spiraling through the air, this cove’s got everything but Jordan Love launching throws from a pontoon. You know you’re a seasoned boater in Oshkosh when you see churning green at the launch and think, “Ah, just extra lake flavor for my prop!”
So, it was Saturday: the forecast called for sunshine, the kind that makes you believe sunscreen is for cowards and brats are a basic food group. Little man and his buddy were ready to tube — which any parent will tell you means you’re guaranteed at least a few Show-Me-What-Gravity-Can-Do moments. We launched from the infamous Monominee Park, wind east (algae thick enough for a Ninja Turtle cameo). Out came the tube, and off we charged through the chop toward Streich’s: a true “children overboard” extravaganza, with three tube flips courtesy of Captain Dad’s patented ‘Hard Left, Hold Tight!’ maneuver.
Grillin', Chillin' — The Streich's Social Scene
When you make landfall at Streich’s Beach, you’re joining a tradition richer than Packers tailgating. A grill full of cheddar brats, football in hand, maybe a chat about the old barge-party days (“Remember Vic Ferrari on the floating stage?”). Around here, falling off the tube just means earning a brat and getting your name in the unofficial Hall of Splash.
Local pop-culture shoutouts? Absolutely. Winnebago’s Streich's Beach is the original “Party Cove,” with more stories than a season of "Stranger Things" — minus the Demogorgon, plus more grilling. And every boater knows a post-5:30 chop can turn would-be tube gladiators into sunburnt philosophers, as the wind picked up and two-foot rollers ended our tubing saga. The boys admitted defeat —but had exaggerated tales of their aquatic heroism.
The Takeaway: Boating Is for Bragging
If you haven’t talked with random boaters, grilled too many brats, and watched your kid wipe out spectacularly on a tube — did you even boat? Lake Winnebago is Oshkosh’s answer to Hollywood: starring you, the boat, a tube, and a day you’ll be bragging about at WaterFest next year. Drop a comment with your favorite lake story. Or tell me what the wildest thing you’ve seen flying off a tube was — bonus points if it was actually a person.
