A Day of Boating, Fishing, and Surprises
There are Sunday Fundays—and then there are epic outings on Lake Winnebago and the Fox River that outshine your typical weekend adventure. This time, our mission was clear: launch the boat in Menasha, introduce the kids to fishing, and let the day drift wherever the currents (and laughter) would take us.

We kicked off the journey at Menasha, the gateway connecting Lake Winnebago to the Fox River. Spirits were high as we trolled along the legendary Fox River, casting lines near the weedbeds by Jefferson Park. The boys gave fishing their best shot—about thirty minutes’ worth—but it turned out the fish weren’t in a Sunday mood.

Next stop: the sparkling, shallow sands of Waverly Beach on Lake Winnebago. The water was clean and perfect for a barefoot splash, and shortly, footballs zipped between decks while snack boxes made their rounds. Lake Winnebago’s shallow swim zones are perfect for kids, while adults get to enjoy soaking up the sun and camaraderie unique to Wisconsin’s boating scene.

Energized, we powered up the Fox River in Neenah, admiring the beautiful riverside homes—every one nearly as show-stopping as the next. More fishing, more giggles, a scenic run to the dam, and then back. Our grand finale? Discovering a full-on pelican parade had taken over the tiny island by Jefferson Park—one of those “only in Wisconsin” wildlife moments that begs for both photos and a double-take.

No, the fish weren’t biting, but every moment with the kids became a memory—and that’s the real catch of the day.

Why Boating on Lake Winnebago & the Fox River is a Must

Both waterways offer welcoming access points perfect for launching family adventures.  Lake Winnebago is famous for shallow, sandy beaches—ideal for swimming, water games, and picnics.  The Fox River presents a scenic cruise with impressive riverside homes and peaceful fishing spots.  Wildlife surprises (hello, pelican island takeover!) add real excitement to every trip. These combined waterways create endless opportunities for both laid-back days and spontaneous fun.
